Eight-year-old Daniel Gallagher is dying. His mother refuses to believe it, and Daniel is too afraid to make her listen. Then, by chance, he meets Sadie Gordon, an eighty-one-year-old survivor of Stalinist Russia, and everything changes. It isn’t long before he has captured her heart and she can’t imagine life without him.
Only then does the secret that has made Daniel old beyond his years come tumbling out. And, in a moment of confusion, he exacts from her a promise to accompany him to heaven when he dies.
Sadie is left with a terrible choice. Should she compromise the moral beliefs of a lifetime or betray the trust of a dying child?
